We're pleased to announce that a bid for the construction of the Central Section of the Columbia Greenway has been accepted by MA DOT and New England Infrastructure, Inc of Hudson MA is expected to be given a "Notice to Proceed" with the project by the end of October.
The Central Section will connect the Greenway from Main Street up to the Esplanade along the Westfield River. It will be entirely "above grade" (no road crossings!) and features 5 bridges. The Elm Street bridge has been designed to be a signature feature of the Columbia Greenway. It will offer unique views of downtown Westfield from above Elm Street, with benches and lights. The Main Street, or "Gateway" bridge (design rendering below), will welcome people to downtown Westfield and features the seal of the City. There will be access paths off the Greenway at Elm Street and Thomas Street to help users easily access downtown businesses.
The next sign of activity we expect to see is clearing of areas for staging equipment and materials. Work on the trail is expected to take 2 construction seasons.
